Infinality Subpixel Patch is now part of Freetype!

Postby infinality » Mon Jun 18, 2012 3:52 pm

Werner Lemberg merged my subpixel patch into Freetype master today! This means that after the next Freetype release, I will only be supplying the autohint patch and the tiny patch to enable subpixel hinting in Freetype. Don't worry... no features are going to be lost. They will just be coming from a different place, and packaging will change slightly.

Thank you for all your help testing and debugging!

Next task is writing an API for the autohinter so that my changes to it can be officially brought into Freetype.

Great news! :!:
So, in a (hopefully) near future, your amazing font rendering will be enjoyable "out-of-the-box" in all Gnome-based distributions, including Fedora?

Possibly... some distros will likely be scared of some patents that are out there. My understanding is that they have expired however.

man, those have been expired for freakin' two years and ubuntu is still one of the only distros with decent font rendering out of the box?!

It amazes me how little some distros care about font rendering (COUGH fedora COUGH), its a big part of the user experience. Bad font rendering can be an immediate poor impression.

It's not just patents, it's the enormous FUD caused by the patent system. So forget logic.

I've been test-driving an up to date freetype2 from git and like it, no trouble to report so far :) Great work Infinality, thank you so much for advancing the state of freetype-rendering!
